UB40
Red Red Wine Tour
Event Details
UB40, a reggae band formed in Birmingham in 1978, emerged from humble beginnings to become the world's most successful reggae group, selling over 100 million records. The band, originally comprised of friends who met in Moseley, honed their sound in a local basement. Their name, derived from an unemployment benefit form, reflected their working-class roots and left-wing political ideals. They gained popularity with their debut single "King b/w Food For Thought," and their first album, "Signing Off," reached No. 2 on the UK charts, remaining there for 72 weeks.
As UB40's fame grew, they maintained their commitment to social and political issues, with songs like "One In Ten" becoming anthems for the British protest movement. Their innovative approach to reggae, blending original material with covers of classic reggae songs, led to the release of "Labour Of Love" in 1983, which became their first No. 1 album in the UK. The album's success, particularly the single "Red Red Wine," catapulted them to international stardom, making them ambassadors of reggae music worldwide.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, UB40 continued to release successful albums and singles, including "Rat In The Kitchen" and "Promises and Lies," which featured their hit "Can't Help Falling In Love." Their ability to blend social commentary with commercial appeal kept them relevant and beloved by fans globally. The band's lineup remained stable until 2008 when lead singer Ali Campbell left to pursue a solo career, and his brother Duncan Campbell took over as lead vocalist.
In recent years, UB40 has continued to tour and release new music, celebrating their 40th anniversary with the album "For The Many" in 2018. Despite lineup changes and the challenges of maintaining a long career, UB40 has remained a significant force in reggae music, consistently attracting audiences worldwide with their timeless sound and enduring commitment to their musical roots.
